Rice protein concentrate as a feline food ingredient

Rice protein concentrate performed well in short-term adult-cat feeding tests.

CatControlled trial

Review scope

This summary is based on the published abstract. We have not appraised the full methods, tables or supplementary material. Details absent from the abstract remain unverified.

Question and design

24 adult cats in a Latin square; 15-day periods without washouts. Foods with 7%, 14% or 28% rice protein concentrate. Comparator: Food without rice protein concentrate.

What was measured?

Food intake, stool measurements and nutrient digestibility.

Main findings

Protein and several other digestibility measures increased with inclusion. Faecal scores increased; faecal output and fat digestibility did not differ significantly.

Study strengths

Several inclusion levels and within-cat comparisons.

Limitations

Short periods without washouts; adult cats only. The abstract’s food-intake wording and reported P value are inconsistent, so no significant intake claim is made here.

Researchers’ conclusion

The authors considered rice protein concentrate an acceptable, digestible protein source.

Evidence.pet interpretation

Concentrated rice protein is not whole rice. Ingredient digestibility alone does not establish lifelong nutritional adequacy or suitability for cats with disease.

Funding and conflicts

Not verified from the abstract; full declarations have not been reviewed.
