DogFibreInitial evidence summary

What is it?

Calling cellulose a filler does not explain what it does in a formulation. The useful questions are how much is included, what the complete diet supplies and which outcome the manufacturer is trying to achieve.

Source and function

Plant-derived structural fibre; the ingredient specification describes its source and processing. A fibre component used to influence the properties of a complete ration.

What does the research show?

In a 12-dog crossover comparison, a diet with 10% cellulose produced firmer stools than a beet-pulp diet. A separate fibre-and-biotics experiment also used a cellulose-containing control, but several ingredients changed together.

What the evidence cannot tell us

Neither finding isolates every possible effect of cellulose across commercial foods. The 2019 trial compared equal ingredient percentages, not equal total dietary fibre, and lasted only 14 days per period. It was not a weight-management trial.

Questions to ask about a product

Ask for total dietary fibre, energy density and the purpose of the formulation. A lower digestibility value is not automatically a defect, and a firmer stool is not automatically a better clinical outcome.

Safety and practical limits

This profile does not recommend adding cellulose to a pet’s food. Evidence from a formulated experimental diet cannot specify an appropriate home addition or predict tolerance in a dog with digestive disease.
